Something for us all to think about
by Amber-Louise Cantwell
In Junior Church on 22nd September we continued with the theme of Stewardship that Jamie had talked about in the address.
Fran asked the question of what each of us would do if we had £20 to spend. We all suggested items that we didn’t really need! Fran said to try and think of something more useful, that would help somebody else.
We had a discussion and I said I wondered how much a mosquito net cost? Fran looked on the Christian Aid website and saw that 3 mosquito nets cost £15, so we all decided to do something between us to raise that sum of money. We decided against a sponsored event and then Sarah said ’Why didn’t we make some buns to sell with an insect theme?’
Did you know that malaria kills 1.2 million people each year – of which 70% are children under the age of five? One child dies every 30 seconds from malaria. 3,000 people die every day from malaria (that’s like the whole population of Hornsea dying in three days!)
Prevention is the key to combating malaria and this was our small way of trying to help. Medicines can and do help, but not always, so a simple net can save many lives.
We held the Cake Sale after the Harvest Festival Service and managed to raise just over £61, so we can buy at least 12 nets, which we hope will prevent more families suffering the pain of malaria.
Thank you to all who contributed to this amount, as they say ‘every little helps’.
