Pilgrims on a Journey

by Allan and Margot Hipwood

Wednesday 14th May saw eleven stalwart pilgrims leave Hornsea on their journey to Scarborough for the URC Yorkshire Assembly.  Not sandal shod or dressed in sackcloth, but in our spring finery and driven in Pullman comfort, on the kindly loaned Lions' bus, by Hornsea's answer to Stirling Moss, Mrs Margaret Knapton.

The journey was uneventful and gave we pilgrims time to discuss and look forward to the day's events.  On arrival a parking spot awaited us directly opposite the Spa complex, and we made our own way to the Ocean Room, where the gathering was to take place.  Coffee was served (not pro gratis) and we took our places.  Luckily for us we were early, and so obtained 'ringside ' seats.

Around 400 members were present and we were joined by the day's speakers who towered above us on the stage.

Promptly at 11.30 a.m. the Convener, Mrs Pauline Mewis, welcomed is and introduced the speakers.  She also informed us that this would be her last Synod as Convener as she was 'retiring' after 34 years of

taking part in one post or another.  After hearing about past and future events from Mrs. Dorothy Gatting we were led in devotions by the Convener's husband, Rev. Michael Mewis.

The Convener then introduced Rev. Kevin Watson, Moderator of the Yorkshire Synod - who spoke of 'Grace' and how in past times Easter was celebrated by smiling and laughter, so we were treated to many references to 'Hot Cross Bunnies', receding 'hare' lines etc. within all the joviality the serious side of our lives was dwelled upon - and how 'Grace' touches us. In so many different ways.

A vote of thanks was given and during the hymn 'Sweet is the Word, my God, my King' an offertory was taken.

All seated in the restaurant we were served with our choice of lunch, previously ordered: Fish and Chips or Ham Salad, and, we suppose, a veggy option - back at 2.20 pm as ordered.

The Mayor of Scarborough, Councillor G.Andrew Backhouse, then welcomed and entertained us telling us of his year in office, as usual some hilarious moments, and then went on to say before his term of office came to a close he was going to visit all 94 villages under his mayoral umbrella on his bike, as he believes no other mayor as actually visited all the outlying places.  Another interesting and funny half hour with everyone's appreciation shown.

The Scarborough (plus one from Whitby) Singing Vicars were next, brilliantly accompanied on rocking piano and guitar by one of their group, gave us a selection of uproarious new songs to old tunes - 'I could feed five thousand' to the tune of 'I could walk ten thousand miles' etc.  Everyone a gem, well done, the Singing Vicars.

To follow this should have been hard but when Peter Slack, a Derbyshire dairyman, took centre stage (well off centre, actually) the impossible was achieved - his text  "I'm not lost; I'm just not sure where I am" - was an opus on hill farmers versus ramblers.  He entertained us with a deadpan expression - re Les Dawson.  His face only slipped once, as he recalled some of the confrontations – true or otherwise, between farmers and the invading hikers.  The laughter often drowned the speaker and at its completion there was a roar of applause and very many aching ribs, ours among them.

When we had at last settled down the Convener spoke once again, introducing the retiring secretary and treasurer and introducing the new Convener, Sue Ripley.  She also presented a cheque for £625 to the Singing Vicars for their charity, Christian Aid, taken in the collection £425 and £200 from the Synod.

The Assembly concluded with the singing of Amazing Grace, and then the doxology to the tune of 'Hernando's Hideaway'.  Brilliant.

This was our first visit to the Yorkshire Assembly and if they are always like this we think it should be made compulsory to attend.
